Unveiling Bario’s Pice Heritage: Tradition and Technology in One Path

My delegation and I had the chance to set foot to the 1.21 hectares of Puan Dayang Nalin @ Dayang Ulun. He is a dense entrepreneur of the Kelabit community who continues the family legacy since the 1960s.

What to be proud of, this rice field has received myGAP certification through the guidance of the Sarawak State Department of Agriculture. This proves that heritage products can also meet high standards of food quality and safety.

Bario rice is not just ordinary rice; it is a product that has been registered under Geographical Indication – GI. This recognition protects its exclusive identity which can only be found in the Bario highlands.

Besides, the specialty of Bario Rice is its smooth texture and unique aroma, lower carbohydrate content and high market value (RM15/kg in Bario, and higher outside the local market).

I also had the chance to experience harvesting using traditional techniques and receiving paddy. Although we’re now heading towards mechanization, it’s this touch of tradition that keeps Padi Bario’s identity.

With a yield of 2.8 mt/ha, the potential of this paddy is immense to continue being empowered.

Well done to Puan Dayang Nalin and all the field workers in Bario for your dedication!
